What Is the Difference Between a Crown and a Bridge?

When it comes to dental restorations, crowns and bridges are two common options. Both serve to restore the function and appearance of damaged or missing teeth, but they have different purposes and applications. Understanding the difference between these two dental treatments can help you make an informed decision about which one is right for you.

Dental crowns and bridges

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown, also known as a dental cap, is a tooth-shaped covering that is placed over a damaged or decayed tooth. It is custom-made to match the shape, size, and color of your natural teeth, providing strength, protection, and aesthetic improvement. Dental crowns are typically used to restore teeth that are severely decayed, cracked, or weakened, or to cover a tooth after root canal treatment.

How Is a Dental Crown Placed?

At Omni Dental Studio, the process of getting a dental crown usually requires one visit. During the appointment, the dentist will prepare the tooth by removing any decay or damage and shaping it to accommodate the crown. A digital scan of the tooth is then taken to create a custom crown that fits perfectly. It takes about an hour for the custom permanent crown to be fabricated at the office. The permanent crown is then tried in and cemented into place.

What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge, as the name suggests, bridges the gap created by one or more missing teeth. It consists of two dental crowns on either side of the gap, called abutment teeth, with a false tooth or teeth in between, known as pontics. Dental bridges are used to restore both the function and appearance of missing teeth, preventing the remaining teeth from shifting out of position.

How Is a Dental Bridge Placed?

Getting a dental bridge typically requires two visits to the dentist. During the first visit, the abutment teeth are prepared by removing a portion of their enamel to make room for the crowns. Digital scans are then taken to create a custom bridge that fits perfectly. While the permanent bridge is being made, a temporary bridge is placed to protect the prepared teeth. In the second visit, the temporary bridge is removed, and the permanent bridge is cemented into place.

The Lifespan and Care of Crowns and Bridges

One essential factor to consider when choosing a crown and a bridge is their longevity and the care they require. Both crowns and bridges can last many years, sometimes even decades, with proper care. Regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups are crucial to extend their lifespan. While crowns primarily protect a damaged tooth, bridges restore the functionality of missing teeth. Both can face wear and tear over time. Knowing how to care for them and what to expect in terms of longevity can play a pivotal role in your decision-making process.
